Ever since Jimmy Bannos' Big Easy eatery took off more than 20 year ago in a downtown office building, Loop lunchin' has never been the same. The original Heaven on Seven, a small and always bustling restaurant that fetes Mardi Gras every day, features Creole and Cajun dishes in a casual setting. If you're looking for spicy po' boys, mean greens or jambalaya loaded down with chicken, shrimp and andouille sausage, then you've come to the right place. This location is only open for breakfast and lunch (but opens on the first and third Fridays of every month for dinner service), but venues in the Gold Coast, Naperville and Wrigleyville also serve dinner. The walls are decorated with Mardi Gras masks and beads, and zydeco and New Orleans jazz seem to be always pumping from the speakers. If your food is not hot enough, pour on one of the many Heaven on Seven specialty hot sauces, which range from mild to fire-hot. Other highlights of this Chicago classic include the buttery cornbread muffins, steaming red beans and rice, and chocolate peanut butter pie. -- Audarshia Townsend

First time and will go back again. Breakfast is awesome! Omlettes and andouille. New Orleans coffee and not dirty dishwater, for me.
